hmm I really liked the effortless Hemingway-vibe your tweets have, and this is moving in the other direction of being more ornate and less natural - although if you write more it’ll probably smooth out, so keep writing
it’s definitely less terse - i’m not sure that fact necessarily means it’s less “natural” because this is a different medium and i expect to be more verbose. i can’t just be quippy all the time because i don’t have a back and forth banter to lean on. with that said, yeah - i acknowledge that my writing isn’t smooth and expect that it may take quite a while for it to get to a place that i can call “good.”
To clarify what I mean: honest feedback, your concern about your writing coming across as a little pretentious does seem to be true, but all smart people who read a lot but haven’t written as much sound like that. The only way out is to write a lot more.
Also I’d challenge the idea that long-form writing has to be verbose - obviously it’s not gonna be a bunch of witty one-liners, but Hemingway isn’t famous for his tweets, right? It’s just whatever ends up working well for you and your style.
i understand what you’re saying and take no offense to it. all i mean is that recreating my twitter voice exactly is neither possible nor desirable given the different format and context
Chicago is an excellent city and I’ve spent the last 3 years trying to explore as much of it as possible, travelling through all the different neighborhoods and discovering all the cool hidden little spots.
Have you been to Oak Park? I’m no Chicago expert, I’ve been there like 3+ times, but each time I visited Oak Park specifically because of the concentration of the Frank Lloyd Wright houses. I mean, you can not find any other place with that amount of his houses in one spot. Plus there is his house (which is now a museum)
In case you have’’t done that, I would strongly recommend visiting the museum in Oak Park and walking the nearby streets while you are still in Chicago.
First post. Get a job, p4.
